Scripps Health's Bequest Language

An excellent way for you to support Scripps Health's mission is to leave us a bequest in your will, living trust or with a codicil to your will. A bequest allows you to leave property to charity, while continuing to use the property during your lifetime, knowing that you will be leaving a lasting legacy.

If you have included a bequest for Scripps Health in your estate plan, please contact us to let us know. We would like to honor you in life and encourage you to join our prominent estate donor clubs: Scripps Heritage Circle and Mercy McAuley Heritage Circle.

Bequest Language

If you already have a living trust or will, your estate planning attorney can help you include a bequest to Scripps Health. If you are just setting up your estate plan, we have a complimentary Estate Planning Guide, which helps you organize your wishes before meeting with your attorney or financial planner. We have provided some basic bequest language to assist you.

1. Percentage Bequest

This is the most popular choice among our donors as it provides flexibility and saves future amendments, if your estate grows or shrinks. When considering a bequest of a percentage of your estate to Scripps Health, we recommend the following language:

I hereby give, devise and bequeath (____) percent (___%) of my total estate, determined as of the date of my death, to Scripps Health, a nonprofit health system located in San Diego County, Scripps Health, Tax ID #95-1684089, c/o Scripps Health Foundation, Office of Gift Planning, P.O. Box 2669, La Jolla, CA, 92038-2669, for Scripps Health's general use and purpose.

4. Contingent Bequest

If (primary beneficiary) does not survive me, then I hereby give, devise and bequeath to Scripps Health, a nonprofit health system located in San Diego County, Scripps Health, Tax ID #95-1684089, c/o Scripps Health Foundation, Office of Gift Planning, P.O. Box 2669, La Jolla, CA, 92038-2669, (DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY) to be used for Scripps Health's general use and purpose.

Restricted Bequests

If you are considering a bequest but would like to ensure that your bequest is used for a specific hospital, careline, program or site, please let us know. We would be happy to work with you and your attorney to help you identify the appropriate restrictions at Scripps Health to meet your charitable objectives. We highly recommend running your restriction wording by the Scripps Office of Gift Planning to ensure we can fulfill your future wishes.

All bequests must be designated first to Scripps Health. To designate your gift to a specific area, please include language such as the following:

"...to Scripps Health, for the purpose of (hospital, program, careline)..."

For example, if you wish to designate your gift to Scripps Health's capital needs, your bequest must include that wording for us to deposit it into a capital account.

A bequest is generally a revocable gift, which means it can be changed or modified at any time. You can choose to designate a bequest for a general or specific purpose, so you have the peace of mind knowing that your gift will be used as intended. Bequests are exempt from federal estate taxes. If you have a taxable estate, the estate tax charitable deduction may offset or eliminate estate taxes, resulting in a larger inheritance for your heirs.
