It Pays to Give Back for These Two Sisters

It Pays to Give Back for These Two Sisters

For more than 50 years, members of Jane and Anne's family have entrusted their health care to Scripps. So when sisters Jane and Anne saw an ad in the San Diego Union-Tribune about how a Life Estate Gift Annuity (LEGA) supports Scripps Health Foundation, they decided gifting their home was an ideal way to give back to the institution that had cared for them and their family for decades.

Jane and Anne bought their Del Mar home together and have lived in it for 35 years. "We'd been thinking about what to do with our home after we were gone," Jane says. "We don't have any close relatives to leave it to, and we thought this would be an appropriate way to express our appreciation and support for the excellent care that we have received from Scripps, and also to be part of a wonderful future." They called Scripps Health Foundation and set the wheels in motion.

By gifting their home to Scripps for a LEGA, the sisters retain the right to live in their home rent-free and receive income for life. After their lifetimes, the proceeds from the sale of the home will help support Scripps Health programs and services.

The LEGA program offers not only a substantially higher income than a reverse mortgage, but extra flexibility for unexpected life circumstances - if they wish, Jane and Anne could choose to live elsewhere and rent out their property. For now, though, they are enjoying their beautiful home, earning secure income, and pleased to know that their gift will be an important part of the future of Scripps Health.
